Portuguese or Brazilian
As of 1 January 2016, a new spelling, the so-called “Novo Acordo Ortográfico”, came into force. There was an agreement among all Portuguese language countries to adopt the same spelling. There was some opposition to this in Portugal itself, and as a result, the spelling adjustments are not applied by everyone. At Braslíngua, we apply the official 2016 spelling, unless otherwise agreed.
The European and Brazilian Portuguese variants are roughly comparable to Dutch and Flemish or British and American English. Every educated Portuguese-speaking person can understand the written language well, in any variant whatsoever.
