Portuguese or Brazilian

Portugees-Braziliaans Portuguese is a Romance language with about 230 million speakers, on almost all continents. This puts Portuguese in the top 10 of the most widely spoken languages in the world. UNESCO has established that Portuguese is the fastest growing language in Europe after English. It has the potential to become the fastest growing foreign language in southern Africa and South America.

As of 1 January 2016, a new spelling, the so-called “Novo Acordo Ortográfico”, came into force. There was an agreement among all Portuguese language countries to adopt the same spelling. There was some opposition to this in Portugal itself, and as a result, the spelling adjustments are not applied by everyone. At Braslíngua, we apply the official 2016 spelling, unless otherwise agreed.

The European and Brazilian Portuguese variants are roughly comparable to Dutch and Flemish or British and American English. Every educated Portuguese-speaking person can understand the written language well, in any variant whatsoever.
